Millions of years of forces have shaped the bodies we have today. Just as sitting too much or constantly enveloping our feet in constrictive footwear, the tools we use and the force they can generate will shape us too.
But the movements of the tools we use are just an expression of the movements of the body.
For those of you with a sharp aptitude for movement, ‘Flow’ may be almost second nature. If you’re like me, this state only occurs on the shores of an ocean of practice. But, one universal link to all movement is the breath and we are all inherently good at it, if we are mindful.
How many sets and reps does it take for a big wave surfer to transcend all the noise and become one with the rhythms of the ocean. Practice is critical but, so is the nature of that practice.
We have the choice in how we are shaped by the tangible world.
Learn training equipment like the memorized neckline of a lover.
Synchronize the breath with the rhythm of your movement.
Learn to feel time slow and the world outside fade to a murmur. Let your conscious thoughts fade to nothing but the beating of your heart, rhythm of the breath and connection to what is at hand.
Perhaps it’s the almost infinite legacy inherent to the human experience throwing and swinging weapons for survival. Thousands of generations of those with the good fortune and genetics to not die passed that birthright to you.
Perhaps primitive humans knew more about mindfulness than our modern thinking creates room for.
Next time you reach for a weight, be mindful of your breath and make a connection to the tool in your hands and the earth at your feet.
Feel the force of its mass travel through your kinetic chain like an electric current. Let the movement charge you up. Let the breath be like billows feeding the raging fire inside.
Find connection. Find your rhythm. Find your flow.
